Jonah Matranga (USA, Ex-Far) + Chrissy Barnacle + Witching Waves
About this event:
BLOC+ is delighted to announce that we will be visited by DIY troubadour and cult legend Jonah Matranga in August. At one time best known as the lead singer of Far, part of the first wave of great American emotional hardcore (aka “emo” folks, before it was an insult or a department in American Apparel) alongside other legends like Texas Is The Reason, Sunny Day Real Estate and so on.
As a member of Far, Jonah toured and collaborated with his close Sacramento-scene friends in Will Haven and Deftones, co-covering another great post-hardcore classic in “Savory” by Jawbox with the latter. Far eventually released their career-defining “Water & Solutions” record before going on extended hiatus.
Undeterred, Jonah struck out on his own under the guise of Jonah Sonz Matranga and later “Onelinedrawing” (with his indispensable R2D2 drum machine droid) becoming celebrated for his tireless touring ethic and willingness both to put on a show anywhere (including hallways and alleyways) and also to engage directly with his fans and forge a distinct bond with those people so faithfully following his career. It was a brave move but one that created one of the most warmly empathetic and familial fan-bases in contemporary music.
More projects came and went, including the excellent New End Original and a Far reunion, but Jonah finds himself back on the road again as a solo act. We hosted him almost exactly ten years ago as one of BLOC’s first really ambitious attempts to make its mark on the Glasgow musical map so this also has added significance for us, given the success we have enjoyed since.
So we hope you might come and meet the man in person, ably supported by Witching Waves and Glasgow’s own, quite brilliant, Chrissy Barnacle.
Free entry. Good vibes aplenty.
